Discover Your Ideal Getaway Experience in the Heart of Picturesque England

When you find yourself in Windsor, a charming historic market town that’s also home to the iconic Windsor Castle, you’ll discover a treasure trove of nearby destinations perfect for relaxation and unwinding. During my five-year sojourn in the quaint villages of Datchet and Langley, nestled just outside London and within a stone’s throw of Windsor and Slough, my family and friends and I embarked on countless visits to these beautiful spots. Amidst the plethora of options in the vicinity, three gems—Virginia Water Lake, Black Park, and Windsor Great Park—captured our hearts with their unique charm and serene ambiance.

Virginia Water

Nestled within the sprawling expanse of Windsor Great Park, Virginia Water Lake beckons with its grandeur. This magnificent lake predominantly resides in the county of Surrey, although its western fringes gently extend into Berkshire. As I strolled along its shores, I couldn’t help but marvel at its beauty, often reminiscing about the lake’s cameo appearances in the Harry Potter films, where it served as the backdrop for enchanting lakeside scenes.

Mystical Ruins

On the eastern side of the lake, you can find a ruined Roman temple called the Roman Ruins, which adds an air of mystery to the surroundings.

Wildlife Haven

Virginia Water Lake is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. It’s home to a variety of waterfowl, including swans, ducks, and geese. Carp and other fish species also inhabit its waters.

An intriguing historical tidbit caught my attention during one of my visits. During World War II, authorities took the unusual step of draining the lake. The rationale behind this decision was simple yet crucial: the lake’s distinctive shape inadvertently served as a guiding beacon for enemy forces at night, potentially leading them to the strategically important Windsor and its surrounding military targets.

Impressive rows of trees, including the famous avenue of Giant Redwoods planted in the mid-19th century, line the shores of the lake.

Black Park Country Park

Black Park unfolds an entirely different narrative, especially during the winter months. Here, the woods beckon with an enchanting promise of getting lost amidst their mysterious embrace. Spanning a sprawling 530 acres of pristine woodland and heathland, Black Park stands just outside London’s bustling heart, in Wexham, Buckinghamshire. What makes this destination even more intriguing is its proximity to the world-renowned Pinewood Film Studios, which has hosted the creation of countless cinematic masterpieces, including James Bond, Harry Potter, and Sleepy Hollow.

Black Park is an extensive woodland and heathland. It spans about 530 acres, attracting nature enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers.

Windsor Great Park and The Copper Horse

Windsor Great Park, a vast expanse spanning 5,000 acres, unfurls to the south of Windsor town, straddling the borders of Berkshire and Surrey. This royal sanctuary boasts a rich history, having served as the exclusive hunting grounds of Windsor Castle for centuries, with its roots tracing back to the mid-13th century.

Windsor Great Park is part of the Windsor Estate

One of the most breathtaking sights you’ll encounter within this majestic park is the awe-inspiring Copper Horse statue. As you embark on the Long Walk, which meanders for approximately three miles (5 kilometers) from Windsor Castle to its terminus at Snow Hill, you’ll enjoy an uninterrupted view of the castle and its picturesque surroundings.

The Copper Horse statue was commissioned by George IV in 1829 as a tribute to his father, George III. It carries an ironic Latin inscription: ‘The best of fathers’. This inscription serves as a poignant reminder and symbolizes the intricate dynamics often found within royal families. Both George III and George IV were known to harbor a deep-seated animosity toward one another.

Windsor Great Park is an ancient Royal landscape of forests, grasslands, lakes and gardens.

The iconic Copper Horse statue on top of Snow Hill. The statue is larger than life, standing about 26 feet (7.9 meters) high. It consists of an iron frame clad in bronze, which has developed a distinctive blue-green verdigris patina over time.

The statue’s stone base, designed by Jeffry Wyatville, bears an ironic Latin inscription: “Georgio Tertio / Patri optimo / Georgius Rex,” translating to “To George the Third / the best of fathers / King George [IV].” This inscription holds historical irony because George III and George IV were known to have had a strained relationship.
